Orange liqueur Cointreau - cocktail recipes. How to make Cointreau liqueur at home and how to drink it correctly

A noble orange liqueur with a refined taste - Cointreau, widely popular. This drink contains aromatic esters and, when consumed in moderation, improves mood, improves stomach and intestinal function, treats bleeding gums, and has an anti-inflammatory effect.

But at the same time, like any other alcohol, it should not be consumed by pregnant or breastfeeding women, persons under 18 years of age, or those with allergies to citrus fruits.

Cointreau - transparent orange liqueur with a strength of 40C from the French company Rémy Cointreau. The drink is made from two types of oranges - bitter and sweet. Which gives it an unusual taste, starting with sweet notes and ending with an orange “explosion”.

Orange peel comes from Brazil, the Antilles, Spain and Southern France. It is infused in alcohol for several days, then distilled twice and mixed with spring water and sugar. Bottled in branded amber glass bottles, the design of which has not changed since 1885.

There are several types of this alcoholic drink:

  • Classic from the zest.
  • Noir is a blend with Remy Martin cognac.
  • Orange Blood - from the zest of blood oranges from Kortika.

Liquor is drunk as in pure form, and in cocktails. Pure Cointreau is poured into cognac glasses. Dilute the degrees with tonic, soda or ice.

Reference. When water or ice is added, real Cointreau changes color to milky white, retaining its flavor. This is due to the high content of essential oils in the drink.

How to make the right choice

When buying this expensive liqueur, you should be wary of counterfeits; of course, designer packaging complicates the process of making a counterfeit, but vigilance will not hurt:

  1. You should choose a drink in stores with an impeccable reputation.
  2. Too low a price is a reason to think about it.
  3. Labels should be positioned evenly, and all inscriptions on them should be clear and easy to read.
  4. The original product should not show any traces of glue on the bottle, deformed cap or chips.
  5. The liquor liquid cannot contain sediment or flakes; it must be absolutely transparent, without any inclusions or floating objects.
  6. After shaking the bottle, you will notice that the contents do not have a watery, but a viscous consistency.

A thorough inspection of the bottle will not take much time, but will help you avoid disappointment from the purchase and poisoning with low-quality ersatz.

Product history

The authorship belongs to the confectioner brothers from France. Their first creation was a drink that to this day is loved by connoisseurs of fine alcoholic drinks, the Ghiglione liqueur. Its unusual taste was achieved by using sweet and sour varieties of cherries. But the next idea of Adolphe and Edouard-Jean Cointreau exceeded all expectations and has not lost popularity since 1895.

Today original recipe is kept strictly secret, and the right to own it and produce liqueur belongs to the concern for the production of alcoholic beverages Remi Cointreau. For those who want to see how Cointreau is born, tours of the workshops are offered. Sweet varieties of oranges are brought to the plant from the southern part of France, sunny Spain, Brazil, and bitter ones - from the shores of the Antilles. The exact proportions are a proprietary secret.

The original name of the drink sounded like Triple Sec, but later it had to be renamed Cointreau to avoid difficulties with obtaining a patent.

Large-scale popularity campaign

It is assumed that the zest of prepared oranges is infused with beet alcohol, after which the tincture undergoes double distillation, which allows it to be purified from all harmful impurities and to achieve extraordinary purity of the product by removing the “head” and “tail”. The middle fraction is brought to the desired taste and strength by adding sugar syrup and spring water. It is not known for certain whether any herbs are used.

The original version of Cointreau liqueur is soft, sweet with a rich citrus aroma. Later, a more brutal composition appeared called Cointreau Noir, in which Remy Martin cognac joins the liqueur.

What made the drink popular was not only its taste qualities, but also a large-scale advertising campaign, quite bold and provocative for those times. The best designers worked on the image of the liqueur and promoted it to the masses, popular models and actresses were attracted, and their images in advertising the drink looked bold and erotic. Since 1898, advertising posters for liqueur with Pierrot appeared. The fairy-tale hero changed his image from eternally sad and melancholy to rather joyful and slightly intoxicated.

Especially for this product, its creators patented a special bottle. Such packaging is aimed at solving two problems at once: firstly, it emphasizes the originality of Cointreau and protects the consumer from counterfeits, and secondly, it creates an image elite drink for a specific class. A bottle that depicts the Statue of Liberty, with a scattering of Swarovski crystals, was developed especially for import to the USA.

Cointreau is a strong orange liqueur originally from France. Of course, this is not the only liqueur made from oranges. All over the world, and in France in particular, there are at least two dozen similar drinks.

The series “Sex and the City” brought world fame to the liqueur. The heroines of the series introduced the Cosmopolitan cocktail into fashion. Together with him, Cointreau, who was part of it, settled on the shelves of bars. In Russia, another legendary cocktail made the liqueur popular - B-52 (B-52).

Secrets of Cointreau production

For more than a century, Cointreau production was a family affair and the liqueur recipe was passed down from generation to generation, never leaving the walls of the house. And although the brand has become part of the Remi Cointreau concern for the last 30 years, the secret famous drink was never made public.

Thanks to the Cointreau Museum, located at the plant, and advertising campaigns, some secrets of the technology and recipes still leaked out.

  1. For liqueur, 2 varieties of oranges are used: bitter and sweet. Bitter oranges are brought from the Antilles, sweet varieties - from the Mediterranean and Spain. The bitter zest is dried in the sun, the sweet zest is used in fresh. The main question is the relationship between these tastes. The exact and even approximate proportions are unknown.
  2. Citrus zest is infused with a unique mixture of grain and beet alcohols.
  3. The extract from the peel is subjected to double distillation with obligatory division into factions.
  4. The liquor is blended using sugar syrup and purified water.
  5. The taste of the liqueur reveals the use of herbs. Connoisseurs point to cinnamon, cayenne pepper, Bay leaf. But this is just speculation. There is no official information on this matter.

Orange liqueur Cointreau using original technology

As mentioned above, accurate and detailed recipe no one knows the drink. We will try to get as close to it as possible. We will use the technology published by the manufacturer as the basis for the recipe.

As an alcoholic base, you can use vodka, alcohol or moonshine, diluted to 40-45°. When using moonshine, it is necessary to distill the tincture. In this case, you must completely adhere to the original recipe.

List of ingredients:

  • vodka, alcohol, moonshine (40° strength) - 1 liter;
  • medium-sized oranges - 3 pcs;
  • grapefruit - 1 piece;
  • granulated sugar - 200 grams;
  • water - 200 ml;
  • black pepper – 5 peas;
  • red pepper – 1 gram;
  • bay leaf – 1 piece.

Cooking method

  1. First, scald the citrus fruits with boiling water to get rid of the layer of wax on the peel. Wipe dry with a woolen cloth. Now you can remove the zest. We do this with a grater, vegetable peeler or a kitchen knife with a sharp blade. In the latter case, try to remove the top layer as thinly as possible so as not to touch the bitter white skin.
  2. The zest needs to be cut into pieces of the same size. It is better to dry it before further use. For quick results, a regular heating radiator or oven is suitable.
  3. We put the prepared zest in a jar along with a bay leaf and 2 types of pepper. Black peppercorns should be crushed in a mortar or masher. We take out the bay leaf after 5 hours.
  4. Infuse the crust with spices in vodka for 1-2 weeks. After this, filter the drink through a cotton-gauze filter. You can stop at this stage. Season the tincture with sugar syrup and taste it after a couple of days. But if you have a moonshine still at hand, we suggest that you still finish the job.
  5. We distill the carefully strained drink through a cube. The first distillation can be carried out without separation into fractions. Collect all the resulting distillate for the second distillation.
  6. When repeating distillation, be sure to separate the “heads” and “tails” containing fusel oils. To do this, we skip the first 30 ml of the drink; we will not use them further. To get rid of the “tails” we stop collecting the distillate after the temperature drops below 50°.
  7. Make sugar syrup from water and sugar. Pour the syrup into warm water, bring to a boil and simmer for 5-7 minutes. At the same time, remove the resulting foam.
  8. Cool the finished syrup and add to the orange distillate. At the same time, we focus on strength and sweetness. The strength of the diluted drink should not be higher than 40°, and select the sweetness to your taste.
  9. After mixing, it is better to drink liqueur not immediately, but let it sit for 3-5 days. People call this stage “marriage.”

The result is a clear and aromatic liqueur with a complex bitter-sweet taste, orange notes and a spicy aftertaste. A sign of the right Cointreau liqueur is a noble “nebula.” When mixed with ice or water, the color of the drink becomes milky. This cloudiness is associated with high content essential oils dissolved in water. This is a completely normal reaction that confirms the quality of the liqueur.

Simplified recipe

If you don’t have the desire or time to distill, and you don’t trust spices, there is a less expensive recipe. It is simple, like everything ingenious.

List of ingredients:

  • vodka or alcohol with a strength of 40° - 600 ml;
  • sweet oranges - 1 kg (4-5 pcs);
  • granulated sugar - 350 grams;
  • water - 350 ml.

Cooking method

  1. Collect the zest. As in the previous recipe, we do not need white skin. Try to do without it.
  2. Squeeze the juice out of all available oranges (including peeled ones). Required quantity: 480 ml. If necessary, you can take more oranges or dilute the resulting juice with water.
  3. Mix freshly squeezed juice, zest, sugar in a saucepan and boil. You need to heat until the sugar is completely dissolved. Then bring to a boil and cook for 7-10 minutes.
  4. Mix sugar-orange syrup cooled to room temperature with vodka (alcohol) in a container for infusion.
  5. You will have to insist for a long time, at least 3 months. But after this you can strain through a cotton-gauze filter, filter if necessary. And enjoy the fact that we were able to prepare Cointreau liqueur at home at no extra cost.

The result of your manipulations will be a strong, slightly sweet liqueur of a warm straw color. If sugary sweetness is not to your taste, you can use less sugar syrup. It is better to add not all at once, but in parts.

Attention, TODAY only!

Orange liqueur Cointreau is one of the most famous and popular alcoholic drinks in the world. It has been produced in France since 1875. The recipe was invented by the son of one of the Cointreau brothers, who created a distillery in 1849 with the aim of providing confectioners with high-quality alcoholic ingredients. After 10 years, the recipe and the shape of the bottle for it were patented. Since then, the drink has won more than 300 awards and gained admirers all over the world. However, for many people, their acquaintance with this masterpiece is just beginning, and for them the urgent question is how to drink Cointreau correctly in order to get the maximum pleasure from drinking it.

Beverage characteristics

People who are far from the world of alcohol would do well to know what Cointreau liqueur is, then the anticipation of meeting it will become part of a pleasant story, and getting to know this drink will not disappoint.

Cointreau liqueur is made from beet distillate infused with the zest of bitter and sweet oranges, taken in a special proportion. The strength of the drink is 40%, which distinguishes it from many other liqueurs.

Contrary to the expectations of people who got their hands on a bottle of Cointreau for the first time, the orange liqueur turns out to be transparent. However, when ice is added, it takes on an opalescent color. This happens due to the presence of a large amount of natural esters in the drink. If Cointreau does not turn white upon contact with ice, this is a fake that does not deserve respect.

You can also find dark Cointreau on sale - a mixture of orange liqueur and cognac. The drink began to be produced relatively recently, after the merger of Cointreau & Cie SA with the Remy Martin company.

Features of use

Cointreau is a unique drink, but its consumption is subject to the same requirements as tasting other liqueurs, with only minor additions due to the specific characteristics of Cointreau.

  • Cointreau liqueur can be drunk pure or diluted. The latter option is preferable, since in its pure form the drink is rather strong. Citrus fruit juices (grapefruit, orange) are most suitable for diluting orange liqueur. No less pleasant taste obtained by diluting liqueur with carbonated drinks (soda, tonic). Many connoisseurs of Cointreau prefer to dilute it with ice cubes.
  • The optimal temperature for drinking is 4–6 degrees. You can cool it in the main chamber of the refrigerator. It is at this temperature that the liqueur has the richest and most delicate aroma, soft and pleasant taste.
  • Cointreau can be served as an aperitif or digestif. You shouldn’t offer it for dinner: it would be a violation of etiquette.
  • When consumed in its pure form, Cointreau liqueur is poured into liqueur glasses or served in a cognac glass. The latter option is considered more successful if the liqueur is diluted with ice cubes, and also if we are talking about dark Cointreau.

Popular Cointreau-based liqueurs are served, depending on their type, in shots, cocktail glasses or glasses.

Orange liqueur is considered a dessert drink, and it is customary to offer sweet dishes as a snack:

Cointreau liqueur has a pleasant orange flavor and an equally pleasant bitterness. It is customary to drink it both neat and as part of numerous cocktails.

1 Fine line between sweet and bitter

There are many orange liqueurs in the world. However, the first thing almost every one of us remembers is Cointreau liqueur. Why? Yes, because its taste is so original and unusual that one tasting is enough to remember it forever.

Cointreau liqueur is a classic orange liqueur with a strength of 40 degrees. The drink itself is transparent. It has a light floral-fruity aroma. As a rule, it is used to prepare cocktails, less often it is drunk as an aperitif. There are two types of this liqueur. These are the original Cointreau and Cointreau Noir. Cointreau Noir is a mixture of the original liqueur and Remy Martin cognac. This cognac is produced by the company that today owns the brand - Remy Cointreau.

The secret of the drink’s taste is the combination of oranges (bitter oranges from the Antilles) and sweet oranges from Spain and Brazil. They are used in the production of the world famous liqueur. The technology of its production is no less secret than the recipe, however, the data about the oranges used is reliable. The company had to show its cards at least a little so that it had something to build an advertising campaign on. Since it is obvious that the drink contains a citrus note, we decided to make this part of the recipe public. The rest of the composition remains classified. Cointreau is a family business, so the secret has been kept for 140 years.

The main advantage of the drink is not the use of unusual citrus fruits or high-quality alcohol, but the balance of taste. A little more bitterness or sweetness, and the liqueur would not have evoked those emotions that are so generously shared by everyone who tries it for the first time. Naturally, many try to reproduce such an unusual orange drink at home.

2 Making French liqueur in your kitchen is easy

Despite the fact that the composition of the liqueur is secret, there are many recipes for preparing such a drink. Considering that the average bottle of Cointreau costs $25, the gamble is worth the candle.

To make Cointreau at home, you will need 1 liter of good vodka or white rum. If you can replace the vodka with rum, the price of your home experiment will be higher than the price of the original Cointreau, but some are willing to do this for the sake of experimentation. In addition to the alcohol base, you need to take one lemon and three small oranges. The spices you will need are red and black peppercorns, bay leaves and sugar. The composition is not very complicated, as is the preparation itself at home.

You need to zest citrus fruits - it’s better to just whole fruit grate until you get to the white layer, you don’t need to take it. Grind five black peppercorns and two red peppercorns into dust with a bay leaf. Mix spices with zest and sugar. You should take at least 200 grams of sugar per liter of alcohol. IN glass containers mix the zest with spices and alcohol, seal tightly with a cork and send to a cool, dark place for a week. At the end of the aging period, the mixture must be strained through cheesecloth and tasted. Now the liqueur can be drunk as is, or diluted with distilled water to reduce the strength.

If you like Cointreau, then this homemade recipe will help you get a copy of it in large quantities. This is especially true for those who make their own highly purified moonshine.

Men's cocktails with Cointreau

It is not at all necessary, of course, that the following recipes be used to prepare alcoholic drinks only for men, just as the above ones are used to prepare drinks only for women. But, as practice shows, these cocktails with Cointreau are still preferred by the stronger sex.

Cocktail with Cointreau “AK-47”

This cocktail is very strong and just as reliable in terms of getting alcohol intoxication, like the murder weapon that gave it its name.

And it’s not surprising - the cocktail contains seven (!) alcoholic drinks:

  • cognac,
  • vodka,
  • gin,
  • Cointreau liqueur,
  • bourbon,
  • light rum,
  • whiskey.

For one serving of cocktail - ten milliliters of each plus ten milliliters of lime juice. Shake all ingredients in a shaker with ice, filter into a glass and top up with soda. Don't forget to throw a small piece of lime into each glass.

Cocktail with Cointreau “Vermut tripple”

It uses white vermouth and gin - thirty milliliters each and fifteen milliliters of Cointreau liqueur. The cocktail is prepared in a shaker without ice and strained into a glass with two pieces of citrus fruit - orange and lemon.

Cocktail with Cointreau “Rheingold”

Twenty-five milliliters of gin, fifteen Cointreau, ten milliliters each of white vermouth and Campari. The ingredients are mixed in a separate glass with ice and poured into a cocktail glass, in which a piece of orange has already settled.

Cocktails with Cointreau for everyone

“For everyone” means “for persons who have reached the legal drinking age in your country.”

Cocktail with Cointreau “Singapore”

  • In fact, there are only a couple of drops of Cointreau liqueur in this cocktail, as well as Angostura bitters and Benedictine liqueur.
  • The main drink is gin, you need thirty milliliters of it, we also take ten milliliters of cherry liqueur.
  • Mix all this together with pieces of ice in a shaker, strain into a cocktail glass, which also contains ice, and top up with a mixture of pineapple and lime juices.
  • Garnish the rim of the glass with a piece of fresh pineapple.
  • You can also use a cocktail cherry for decoration.

Cocktail with Cointreau “Peach”

  • Fill the shaker about halfway with crushed ice, pour three tablespoons of gin and Cointreau liqueur and four tablespoons of peach juice into it.
  • Shake and strain into a wide glass.
  • Add soda - this is according to the classic recipe.
  • From experience - maybe someone will like it better this way too - you don’t need to use soda, without it the taste of the cocktail is more pronounced.

But this is IMHO. Experiment!

Story

The Cointreau company, represented by two brothers, began producing alcohol back in 1849. 25 years later, the son of one of them, Edward, created a recipe for Cointreau liqueur, and a year later the drink saw its first fans. Both the drink, the label, and its unusual dark amber rectangular bottle were immediately patented. But the name Triple Sec White (or Blanco) Curasao had to be changed to Cointreau.

In 1989, the Cointreau and Remy Martin companies merged - now the brand passed into the hands of Remy Cointreau.

Types and varieties:

There are only two of them: the classic “Cointreau” (made according to the original, unchanged recipe) and the “Cointreau Noir” liqueur (a blend of the classic liqueur and Remy Martin cognac).

The strength of Cointreau is reflected in the bottles in which it is bottled. The most elite, expensive and famous is 40-proof alcohol, hidden behind dark brown glass.

Effect on the body: increases appetite, gives spiritual harmony.

How to drink Cointreau liqueur correctly

  1. In its pure form (chilled or with ice) from liqueur glasses. Drink in one sip.

Serve liqueur before meals, as an aperitif. Cool before serving. A glass or shot glass is decorated with a slice of lemon/lime or cut a spiral of zest from these fruits.

  1. In cocktails. Over two hundred of them have been created. Among them you will find both long drinks and shots. The best are: cocktail “Margarita”, “B-52”, “White Lady”, “Long Island”, “Cosmopolitan”, “Japanese Shoe”, “Smoothie”, etc.

For cocktails, you can use different glasses - “martins”, “tumblers”, liqueur glasses, etc.

Secrets of production:

Speaking of Cointreau, it would be naive to believe that a company that has been profiting from its sale for almost 150 years will tell the world all the details of its production.

What is known for certain is that in the process of its creation, the sun-dried zest of not quite ripe bitter oranges is combined with fresh sweet zest (in a secret proportion) and placed in alcohol (a blend of grain and beetroot) for several days, after which, using copper distillation cubes , distill the resulting tincture twice. The “head” and “tails” are sent for other needs, and the “heart” of the distillate is used to prepare liqueur.

After this, the selected alcohol is diluted with spring water and sweetened with sugar syrup.

It is interesting that no one has yet reproduced an exact copy of Cointreau, despite the simplicity of its production technology.

The secret of bitter orange

They even try to make Cointreau at home, because the process of its creation is not a big secret. Although, of course, without knowing those very patented details, the original cannot be reproduced at home. For its production, two varieties of oranges are used: bitter and sweet. That is why orange liqueur has a double aftertaste. This was the main difference between the drink and its Dutch counterparts, which were overly sweet. The bitter orange zest, which Edward began to order on the island of Curacao, gave his brainchild a tart piquancy - the very zest that was so lacking in the assortment of liqueurs of that time. It is this feature that brought Cointreau world fame.

Orange zest undergoes thorough maceration, a process that allows it to extract the maximum amount of a large number of essential oils, which give the drink an unforgettable taste and aroma. In addition to orange zest, this nectar contains the following simple elements:

  • sugar;
  • water;
  • alcohol.

By the way, the strength of the drink at the end is 40 degrees, which is quite a lot for liqueurs in general. Therefore, traditionally it is considered masculine, although in modern times, of course, there are no restrictions for lovers of strong drinks.

It was developed back in 1875 by Edouard Cointreau. His family owned a distillery producing alcoholic beverages based on fruits grown in local regions. Despite the fact that information about the composition is kept secret, the main components of the liqueur are orange peels bitter and sweet varieties. As for the strength, the drink contains 40 degrees of alcohol.

The good news is that today the recipe for this original drink hasn't changed. Its taste is no different from the Cointreau released at the beginning of production. The liqueur is popular all over the world, and especially in European countries.

How and with what to drink Cointreau liqueur correctly? It can be served either pure or as part of cocktails. It is also used for impregnating baked goods, preparing confectionery fillings, sauces, and ice cream.

Unlike other types of liqueurs, Cointreau contains much less sugar, which is why it can be drunk in its pure form. To reduce bitterness, we recommend adding a couple of ice cubes. But still, most people prefer to add it to cocktails.

If you are going to drink the drink neat, be sure to refrigerate it. As for glassware, regular small glasses will do. You can even consume Cointreau before meals, as it improves and stimulates the digestive processes.

Less popular cocktails

  • "Margarita" - one of the most popular drinks, which contains orange liqueur. To prepare it, you need to mix 30 ml of tequila, 10 ml of orange liqueur and 25 ml of lemon or lime juice. Serve in a glass garnished with a lemon wedge and salt around the rim.
  • "Barbarella": mix 50 ml of orange liqueur and 25 ml of Sambuca, add crushed ice.
  • "Blue Skies": mix 35 ml Cointreau, crushed ice, 35 ml Curacao liqueur. Fill in mineral water with gas in the required amount, garnish with a slice of lemon.
  • "Purple Devil": mix 25 ml of Triple Sec liqueur, 25 ml of orange liqueur, the same amount of almond liqueur. Add ice and shake, pour cranberry juice. Add 20-30 ml of soda.

  • Cocktail “Fluffy Dog”: you will need only two ingredients, 30 ml each - Cointreau and Baileys liqueur. Mix both ingredients with ice.

Shelf life of Cointreau

The taste and properties of the drink are not lost even after time. An unopened container of liqueur can be stored for several years. If it is stored too long, you will see the drink begin to thicken and separate. Store in a cool, dry place, away from heat.

You can prepare cocktails with the addition of Cointreau at home. Treat yourself and your friends to a classic Margarita or a Fluffy Dog.
